JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon Advocates for Merit-Based Immigration to Sustain U.S. Global Leadership 

San Francisco – At the Data + AI Summit 2025, Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, called for a fundamental reform of the U.S. immigration system, urging the adoption of a merit-based model aligned with America’s long-term economic and strategic goals. 

Dimon’s remarks were direct and forceful, criticizing the current state of U.S. immigration policy, which he believes is falling short in supporting the nation’s role as a global leader in economics, military strength, and technological innovation. 

Speaking to a room of business and technology leaders, Dimon emphasized that America’s strength has long stemmed from its openness to talent and opportunity. Reflecting on his own family’s immigrant roots—his grandparents arrived in the U.S. from Greece—he underscored the importance of preserving a system that attracts skilled individuals from around the world who are eager to contribute to American society. 

“Freedom, prosperity, and innovation have always made America a beacon,” said Dimon. “But we need immigration policies that reflect these values and support our global leadership.” 

His comments stand in contrast to the restrictive immigration stance seen during recent political cycles, including policies aimed at reducing both legal and undocumented immigration. Dimon called instead for a more open, inclusive, and meritocratic approach, which he believes would help the U.S. maintain its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving global landscape. 

Beyond immigration, Dimon also touched on broader economic issues, including challenges in the housing market, mortgage accessibility, and the need for modernized job training programs. He emphasized that without proactive reforms in these areas, the U.S. risks losing its edge in innovation and productivity.
